The Students First Initiative
Begun as a five-year endowment initiative, the Students First Initiative is designed to grow an endowment to support students with both Merit-Based and Need-Based Scholarships. We must reward achievement to attract the best and brightest students. Less than 25% of Financial Aid comes from the Endowment, but for an institution our size and composition the amount should be twice as much. This ongoing initiative will assist us in increasing support to merit-based students.
Financial aid is one of our students’ greatest concerns and is often a barrier to student retention and graduation. Some 96% of Lincoln students receive financial assistance, including federal and state grants and loans. Sixty-four percent are the first in their families to attend college and more than 50% are from single parent headed households, whose families earn less than $45,000 annually. While many students work full or part-time jobs, most graduate with a loan debt in excess of $40,000.
This effort is an integral part of Lincoln University’s comprehensive annual giving campaign.
Gifts to the Students First Initiative will grow the endowment for student aid in two ways:
- Your gift can be unrestricted. A gift of any size can be designated toward the Students First Endowment Fund. The earnings from this fund are used to support students at the discretion of the financial aid office.
- You can name an endowed scholarship fund and restrict awards to specific types of students, e.g. science majors from a particular city or state with a minimum GPA. Contact the Development Office to learn how you can create a Lincoln endowed scholarship fund
