University Mourns Alumnus & Baseball great

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA - Monford Merrill "Monte" Irvin, born in Haleburg, Alabama, was a football star on the field during his days at Lincoln. A multi-sport all-state player during his childhood in New Jersey, he played: baseball, football, basketball and was a member of the track team at Orange High School. After high school, he made his way to Lincoln University while playing professionally with the Negro Leagues' Newark Eagles in 1938 at the age of 17. To protect his football eligibility at Lincoln, he played baseball under a different name.
