Lincoln University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Cheryl Renée Gooch as Dean of the School of Humanities and Graduate Studies. She began her duties at Lincoln on July 2.
Gooch has more than 20 years of academic leadership and teaching experience at both teaching and research-focused institutions, complemented by leadership accomplishments in the public service and community development/nonprofit sectors.
Most recently, Gooch served as founding Dean of the School of Humanities and Fine Arts, and Professor of Media Studies at Gainesville State College, University System of Georgia. Her academic and public service leadership appointments include Associate Dean of the Division of Communication Arts, Clark Atlanta University; Community Builder, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; Wilmington Campus Director, Delaware State University; Assistant Director, Racial and Ethnic Bias Study Commission, State of Florida Supreme Court; and Chairperson, Department of Communication Arts, Alabama State University.
“I am honored to serve the students of Lincoln University, both our traditional and adult learners,” said Gooch. “In keeping with the mission of our institution, I will work in partnership with faculty colleagues to enhance the impact of our shared disciplines to improve the human condition through teaching, professional engagement, scholarship, and service.”
Gooch teaches, conducts research, and publishes in the areas of media & culture, ethnographic journalism, and communication & social change. An avid genealogist, she has recently completed a book-length work of narrative journalism that chronicles six generations of Gooch family history from slavery to the present. Gooch is an active member of the International Association for Literary Journalism, Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, Association for the Study of African American Life and History, and the Toni Morrison Society.
“Lincoln University is so fortunate to have selected Dr. Gooch, who possesses the solid academic credentials and experience necessary to lead the School of Humanities and Graduate Studies to new heights of excellence,” said President Robert R. Jennings. “Additionally, her public service experience will also bring a much-needed element to the table as Lincoln University forges important community partnerships.”
Gooch holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Florida State University, an M.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University, and a B.A. in Political Science from Howard University.
