LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – The Kennett Symphony of Chester County’s brings the treasured children’s book character Babar the Elephant to life with music and narration, as the centerpiece of their annual Free Children’s Concert and Instrument Petting Zoo. The Symphony, under the direction of Music Director Mary Woodmansee Green, will offer two free children’s concerts this year. Saturday, March 20 at 2:00 pm the Kennett Symphony will perform at Lincoln University’s new International Cultural Center on Baltimore Pike at Elkdale Avenue. This will be the first opportunity for the Symphony to perform in this beautiful, state-of-the-art venue.
In addition to the narrated story of Babar, the program will include short demonstration pieces for the four sections of the orchestra. Violinist Arianna Schickel, a Young Artist Instrumental Competition winner will perform the finale from “Spring” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and 11 year old student pianist Janet Wu will play Haydn’s Finale Piano Concerto in D Major.
Actor Michael Boudewyns will narrate the story of Babar, a young orphaned elephant who eventually becomes King, while the Symphony performs the musical background composed by Francis Poulenc. Similar to the classic production Peter and the Wolf, various instruments are used to illustrate Babar and the other characters in the story. To close the afternoon’s performance, Maestra Green traditionally leads the exciting Radetsky March, to which the children love to clap along with the music.
The Kennett Symphony’s popular Instrument Petting Zoo will immediately follow the performance. Children will have the opportunity to meet the musicians, ask questions, and perhaps bow, blow, or bang on instruments provided by Taylor Music of West Chester.
The hour-long concert is intended for children 3 years and older and their families. No tickets are required, however donations are greatly appreciated. This free concert is funded in part by generous donations from Target, West Chester Friends School, Phillips Mushroom Farms, Kohl’s, Dansko, and the Kennett Symphony League.
