Nation’s first degree-granting HBCU advances four places from last year

US News & World Report - Best CollegesLINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – Lincoln University ranked 17 among the top Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU), advancing four places from last year, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual 2016 HBCU rankings released today.

In total, there were 80 HBCUS; 72 of which were ranked. Schools designated as such by the U.S. Department of Education were compared only to one another for this ranking and were ranked based on quantitative measures that education experts have proposed as reliable indicators of academic quality, and is based on U.S. News & World Report’s nonpartisan view of what matters in education.

“Lincoln University’s progress in the HBCU rankings is a testament to the hard work our faculty, staff and administrators have put forth,” said Dr. Richard Green, interim-president of the university. “We have a commitment to realize the fullest potential of this distinguished institution of higher learning.”

The indicators used to capture academic quality fall into six categories: assessment by administrators at peer institutions, retention of students, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.

The university saw noted improvements in average freshmen retention rate from 66 percent to 71 percent; student/faculty ratio from 17/1 to 14/1; and the percentage of full time faculty, from 79 percent to 81 percent.

Last year, Lincoln who was ranked 21, had fallen one place in 2014 rankings.

According to U.S. News & World Report, the data used in the HCBU rankings, with the exception of a separate HBCU peer assessment survey, was the same as those published and used in the 2016 edition of the Best Colleges rankings.
