LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA  – Lincoln University student volunteers painted murals, inspirational quotes and college logos at James G. Blaine Elementary School as part of a day of service on Monday honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

MLK Day of ServiceLincoln students, who were joined by Dr. William R. Hite Jr., Superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia and United States Congressman, Chaka Fattah of Pennsylvania’s 2nd congressional district at the North Philadelphia school, were among thousands of other volunteers who participated in community service activities in Philadelphia.

“The impact Dr. King had on my leadership definitely motivated me to become a better leader because it is not good to just be a follower,” said Aisha Frazier, sophomore business management student, who took part in the volunteer activities through an opportunity provided by Lincoln’s Sophomore Year Experience (SYE) program. “Leaders have the ability to help lay paths of success for other people.”

MLK Day of ServiceThe SYE Program strives to provide sophomore students the opportunity to make an impact locally through its SYE Apprentice Leadership Program, a leadership competition modeled after Donald Trump’s national television series “The Apprentice.” The innovative program is designed to provide sophomore students with a competitive leadership exchange and opportunity to gain and improve their personal leadership skills.

Another sophomore, Jazmin Hanton, a health science major, said that her overall goal for the volunteer effort was to help bring life into the school’s environment and make it more engaging for students to become enthusiastic about learning, which she believes they did.
