LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA ~ Though it’s the responsibility of the project manager to see that job meets specifications, Vernon Lucas has approached the renovation of the Student Union Building at Lincoln University unlike any other project he has managed.
“I take a special interest in this project,” said Lucas, a 1980 graduate of Lincoln University. “I’ve spent many days in this building. It is truly a dream come true to be back on campus and to rebuild the student union.”
Lucas, a native of Philadelphia, said his education from Lincoln University enabled him to become a successful businessman after graduation. Before joining the Temple Group that is managing the renovation of the Student Union Building, Lucas had owned an electrical construction firm that specialized in fire alarm installation and was based in Philadelphia.
“I was successful in a tough business but I decided after 20 years to broaden my horizon,” Lucas said. “I was intrigued by the Temple Group because it is a well run organization.”
Lucas, who majored in mathematics, has fond memories of his days at Lincoln University. In fact, he was not surprised to see his math professor, Dr. Noro Nagase, still on the faculty.
“I see him every week,” Lucas said. “He hasn’t changed. He’s still the same dedicated and committed professor I knew when I was in his class. Mathematics is a very difficult subject to master but important because it is used in most fields. Dr. Nagase made challenging concepts easier to understand.”
“Lincoln was a great, no make that an awesome experience for me. It was a very nurturing environment. I always tell kids about the great education students get from Lincoln,” he added.
Just like he did when he was a student at Lincoln, Lucas commutes daily from Philadelphia to work on the renovation.
Lucas said his degree from Lincoln helped prepare him to earn a master’s in finance from Philadelphia University.
“I’ll tell anyone who wants a good education to seriously consider Lincoln University,” Lucas said.
Founded in 1854, Lincoln University is a premier, historically Black University that combines the best elements of a liberal arts and sciences-based undergraduate core curriculum and selected graduate programs to meet the needs of those living in a highly technological and global society. The University is nationally recognized as a major producer of African Americans with undergraduate degrees in the physical sciences (biology, chemistry and physics); computer and informational sciences; biological and life sciences. Lincoln has an enrollment of 2,423 undergraduate and graduate students.
