HARRISBURG, PA – A select group of 26 students, student government association leadership, alumni, faculty and administrators visited Harrisburg, PA on Wednesday to urge the Pennsylvania General Assembly to significantly increase Lincoln University’s annual state appropriation, at the least fully restoring higher education cuts over the next two years.

The Lincoln University contingent met with a number of state representatives and senators and asked them to significantly increase the university portion of the appropriation for the state-related schools, which also includes the Pennsylvania State University, Temple University and the University of Pittsburgh.

Two months ago, Acting President Dr. Valerie I. Harrison testified before the General Assembly’s House and Senate Appropriations Committee regarding additional funding in the budget appropriation. Presidents of the three other state-related institutions also participated in the hearings.

In 2011, the Commonwealth’s annual appropriation to Lincoln and other state-related universities was significantly reduced. Governor Tom Wolf has proposed a plan to fully restore the higher education cuts over the next two years. The General Assembly is working on their budget proposals and it is anticipated that a state budget will be approved by the General Assembly and Gov. Wolf this summer.

In addition to Wednesday meetings with lawmakers, Lincoln representatives also attended a senate legislative session as well as participated in a luncheon with lawmakers, including leadership from the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus on the Lieutenant Governor’s Balcony.
