LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – Lincoln University recently named Larry J. Woods as its director of Public Safety. Woods, whose law enforcement career spans more than 20 years, has responsibility for the University’s more than 30-member public safety staff, the 422-acre main campus in Southern Chester County as well as the Graduate and Continuing Education Center located in downtown Philadelphia.
Woods comes to Lincoln after spending 13 years with the West Chester University Public Safety Department – most recently as associate director of Public Safety. While at West Chester, Woods became well-versed in university law enforcement – conducting on-and off-campus criminal investigations, hiring practices and firearms training.
Woods rose through the ranks of the West Chester University Public Safety Department, holding the positions of police lieutenant, detective sergeant and platoon sergeant. In addition to previous tours as a police officer for several departments in Chester County, Pa. between 1980-89, Woods was assigned as a temporary special agent for the Pennsylvania Attorney General Office’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation in 1991-92.
“The search committee was extremely please with Mr. Woods’ professionalism, experience and familiarity with campus policing and Chester County,” said William B. Bynum, Jr., Ph.D., Lincoln's Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. “Lincoln is very fortunate to have a seasoned university law enforcement official like Mr. Woods join the staff.”
According to the Office of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Lincoln received more than 4,000 applications from students seeking admission to the University for the 2002-2003 academic year, a 26 percent increase over last year.
Lincoln’s Public Safety Department recently received a $225,000 grant through the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Universal Hiring Program (UHP) to expand the University’s force by three full-time officers.
Founded in 1854, Lincoln University is a premier, Historically Black University that combines the best elements of a liberal arts and sciences-based undergraduate core curriculum and selected graduate programs to meet the needs of students living in a highly technological and global society.
