Alvarez joins LU record book

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. - Senior Rolando Alvarez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) hurled his way into the Lincoln University baseball record book in his final career out.

Alvarez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) struck out seven to become the LU Division II era strikeout leader. He surrendered just one earned run, six total, on seven hits with seven strikeouts as the Lions concluded the home portion of their 2021 slate by falling to Bridgeport, 8-2.

Lincoln had numerous opportunities to seize control of the contest, leaving nine men on base – including bases loaded in the eighth. Six of the nine were left in scoring position.

After Bridgeport scored in the second, freshman Hilman Truss (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) singled home senior Max Guadalupe (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunication Arts) (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunications), who drew a one-out walk.

An error to open the fourth enabled the Purple Knights to tally three unearned runs. Bridgeport increased its lead with its only earned run of the game in the fifth inning.

Freshman Jefry Azcona (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) opened the sixth with a double and came home to score on a two-out Guadalupe double. Lincoln had another chance in the seventh with runners on second and third with one out, trailing 5-2, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.

A two-out threat in the eighth brought the go-ahead run to the plate. Guadalupe's single was followed by back-to-back walks by Smith and Truss. But a fielder's choice brought the inning to an end, and then the Purple Knights tacked on three runs in the ninth.

Guadalupe finished 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, RBI, and a stolen base, while Truss was also 2-for-3 with an RBI.

It marked the final game at Lincoln University baseball field for Alvarez, Guadalupe, Smith, Willie Hines (Bowie, Md./Bowie) (Bowie, Md./Bowie), Bradley Regalado (Queens, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin Memorial) (Queens, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin), Kashif Hines (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy), and Elias Beltre (New York, N.Y./LAM International School) (New York, N.Y./LAM International).
