Another double-double for Lumpkin

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. - The Lincoln University volleyball team fell to Bowie State Monday, 25-20, 21-25, 25-14, 25-15, in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association action at Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.

Lincoln couldn't rebound from an early first set deficit as Bowie State scored seven of the first eight points. The Lions tallied the next four points to stay in close contact with the Bulldogs and pulled to within one point (19-18) late in the set.

However, BSU scored six of the last eight points to secure the victory.

Bowie State raced out to another early lead, scoring eight of the first 10 points, but unlike the first set – Lincoln had an answer. The Lions slowly cut into their deficit and took the lead with freshman Mariah Webster (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) serving. Lincoln scored six straight with the freshman at the helm, and then, freshman Jaida Lumpkin (Middletown, Del./Middletown) served four straight points.

Lincoln held off a mini spurt by the Bulldogs and secured the second set win.

After the game was tied at three in the third set, BSU scored 13 of 15 points to open up a comfortable lead and claimed the third set.

Much like the third set, the visitors used a scoring spurt (9-1) to break a tie and breeze to the win.

Junior Kaiya Lewis (Queens, N.Y./Queens Preparatory Academy) finished with a season-high 12 kills on 23 attempts with just four errors for a .348 hitting percentage. It was the second double-digit kill outing for Lewis this season.

For the fifth consecutive match, Lumpkin dished out double-figure assists with 28. She now reached at least 20 assists four times this season and recorded double-digit digs 10 times this season. It was also her third double-double of the season as she added 11 digs and three block assists.

Webster led the team with 17 digs.

Lincoln travels to Elizabeth City State University Thursday for another CIAA match.
