Baseball drops three to Virginia State

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lincoln University baseball team dropped all games of the non-conference three-game series to Virginia State University this past weekend.

The Lions (0-6) host Bloomfield College for a three-game series at the LU Baseball Complex.

GAME 1: VIRGINIA STATE 3, LINCOLN 2 (EIGHT INNINGS)

A bases-loaded, two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning completed the comeback for Virginia State.

It was a bout of wildness that contributed to the Lincoln loss as the Trojans took advantage of four walks and two hit batters to score three runs in the final two innings. A pair of bases-loaded walks enabled Virginia State to knot the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Lincoln took the lead on an RBI single by senior Elias Beltre (New York, N.Y./LAM International School) (New York, N.Y./LAM International School), scoring sophomore Sheldon Johnson (Pittsburgh Pa./Woodland Hills) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) in the fourth inning. Senior Max Guadalupe (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunication Arts) (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS Telecommunications Arts) added a run in the sixth inning.

Senior Rolando Alvarez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) was stellar on the bump but was saddled with a no-decision. The righty allowed two runs, none earned, on six hits with seven strikeouts. Freshman Josiah Lara (Plant City Fla./Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy), 0-1, (Plant City, Fla./Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) took the loss, allowing an earned run on one hits with two walks and a strikeout.

GAME 2: VIRGINIA STATE 8, LINCOLN 4

Johnson tied a career-high with three RBI, and freshman Damaal Sands (Nassau, Bahamas/Montverde Academy (FL)) (Nassau, Bahamas/Montverde Academy (FL)) tallied the first multi-hit game of his career as Lincoln fell to Virginia State in the nightcap of the doubleheader.

The Trojans took an 8-0 lead with a single run in the second, two runs in the third, and a five-spot in the third.

A bases-loaded double by Johnson pushed three runs across for the Lions in the fifth, and Johnson came around to score on a single by Beltre.

Junior Trevon Sutton (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy), 0-2, (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy) allowed eight earned runs on eight hits in six innings of work with three strikeouts.

GAME 3: VIRGINIA STATE 15, LINCOLN 5

Beltre tallied his first multi-RBI game of the season as Lincoln fell in Sunday's nine-inning game, 15-5.

Eight different players recorded a hit as Lincoln registered eight singles on the day. Sophomore Justin McClain (New Castle Del./Del Castle Tech) (New Castle, Del./Del Castle Tech) crossed the plate twice for the Lions.

Freshman Luis Miguel Reinoso (Beltsville, Md./High Point), 0-2, (Beltsville, Md./High Point) allowed six runs (four earned) on just two hits in 2 1/3 innings. He issued six of Lincoln's 16 walks in the game with one strikeout.
