Baseball falls to Bridgeport

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – The Lincoln University baseball team fell to Bridgeport Saturday, 14-4, in the nine-inning finale of their three-game East Coast Conference series in Bridgeport, CT.

The Purple Knights blew the game open with nine runs in the third inning to take an 11-0 lead. Bridgeport added three more runs in the fourth inning to conclude its scoring.

Lincoln got on the board with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Sophomore Jefry Azcona (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a groundout. A pair of two-out walks by freshman Wesley Hogan (Washington, D.C./Maret) and senior Sheldon Johnson (Pittsburgh Pa./Woodland Hills) loaded the bases, and sophomore Hilman Truss (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) doubled home Azcona and Hogan.

Sophomore Josh Shepherd (Bowie, Md./Bowie) recorded a one-out single, stole second, and scored on an error in the seventh inning. Freshman Jalen Godette (Queens Village, N.Y./Queens Prep Academy) was hit with two outs and moved to third on a single by sophomore Damaal Sands (Nassau, Bahamas/Montverde Academy (FL)), and then Godette scored on a passed ball to cap the scoring.

Senior CarVonte Williams (Cleveland, Ohio/Twinsburg), 0-1, in his first start of the season – allowed nine runs, seven earned – on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Lincoln returns home noon Friday to kick off a three-game series with Mercy. The two teams will play a nine-inning game Friday and a doubleheader Saturday.
