Comeback falls short

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA - Despite trailing for the majority of the game, the Lincoln University women's basketball had a chance to send the game into overtime.

POST GAME PRESSER

However, Bryanna Brown's (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) was slightly off target – possibly due to a shooting foul – and the Lions fell in to Kutztown, 77-74, in the final game of the CIAA/PSAC Challenge at Manuel Rivero Gymnasium Saturday.

Lincoln got off to a slow start, and ultimately, it led to the defeat. The Lions outscored Kutztown in three of the four quarters, but the Golden Bears led 22-9 after the first quarter, causing LU to have an uphill battle in the entire game.

After trailing by 10 at halftime, Lincoln opened the third quarter with a 12-2 spurt to pull to within a bucket.

Four different players found the scoreboard in the run, but it was the one person that didn't score that made the biggest impact on the second half. Junior Jeana Weatherspoon (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) stepped up on the defensive end, holding Kutztown's leading scorer to just four points over the final 20 minutes. This coming after the sharp shooter dropped 18 in the first half.

With Shakira Edwards (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) splitting a pair of free throws with 90 seconds remaining in the third quarter, the comeback was complete as the game was tied at 52.

As the game was tied at 58 in the fourth quarter, a quick 8-0 run seemingly gave the visitors a comfortable cushion. Kutztown's lead was up to nine with 3:36 remaining, but Lincoln had one last run in them.

The run started with a three-pointer from Brown, and when she drilled three free throws with six seconds remaining, the deficit was down to one. A pair of Kutztown free throws pushed the lead to three.

Brown finished with a team-high 21 points with five rebounds and two steals, while senior Shantel Cheeks (Washington D.C./Rock Creek Christian Academy (Harcum College)) added 14 points and two rebounds. For her efforts over the weekend, Brown was named to the all-classic team.
Junior Kania Pollock (Queens, N.Y./The Mary Louis Academy) came off the bench for 13 points and three rebounds.

Lincoln (1-1) returns to action 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against another PSAC team, hosting West Chester.
