LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – As their time at Lincoln University was coming to a close, a group of thoughtful seniors engaged with the local community of their soon to be alma mater.

In April, as part of their co-curricular nursing program, seniors LaTuan Boggerty, Miles Scott, Terrence Stephen, and Maurice White-Harris were shadowing school nurses in the Oxford Area School District when they decided to take on a special project for kindergarten students.
“The students loved being around children and wanted to do something special before the end of their shadowing experience,” said Mary Glatts, an assistant professor in Lincoln’s nursing department.
With assistance from Glatts and Wendy Boyd, the school nurse at the Jordan Bank Elementary School, the nursing students settled on developing a plan to educate kindergarteners on how to use 9-1-1 in an emergency situation.
After devising a curriculum and coordinating with school administrators, the nursing students spent several days visiting different classrooms of the kindergarten center where they gave their presentations on 9-1-1 emergency awareness.
During the 30-minute presentations, the kindergarteners were given different emergency scenarios and learned the appropriate steps to take in each one. In total, over 200 kindergarteners participated in the project.
“It was our pleasure to host the students, and our students benefitted from these lessons,” said Dr. David J. Hamburg, principal of the Jordan Bank Elementary School.
“The project was a success,” said Glatts. “It is my hope that our nursing students will continue the legacy of giving back to the community.”
