Lions drop a pair to ASU

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa  – The Lincoln University baseball team got a pair of solid starts but just couldn't muster enough offense as the Lions dropped a pair of close games to Albany State Friday in non-conference action at the Golden Rams Field.

Lincoln (0-3) travels to Virginia State Saturday and Sunday for a non-conference three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday before rounding up the series with a nine-inning contest on Sunday.

GAME ONE: ALBANY STATE 9, LINCOLN 1
Albany State used some small ball in the first inning to tally four runs en route to the 9-1 victory in the opener.

A pair of bunts sandwiched by a walk loaded the bases for the Golden Rams, and a base-clearing double got the scoring going. ASU added single runs in the second and fourth innings before tacking on a three spot in the fifth.

Freshman Hilman Truss (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) (West Hamilton, N.J./West Hamilton) broke up the shutout with a one-out single in the top of seventh, freshman Josh Shepherd (Bowie, Md./Bowie) (Bowie, Md./Bowie). Redshirt sophomore Willie Hines (Bowie, Md./Bowie) (Bowie, Md./Bowie) went 2-for-3 to account for half of the Lions' hits.

Junior hurler Trevon Sutton (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy), 0-1, (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy) allowed six earned runs on six hits in four innings of work.

GAME TWO: ALBANY STATE 5, LINCOLN 3
Against a drawn-in infield, a blooper that landed in the dirt just beyond third base went for a two-run double that provided the margin of defeat for the Lincoln Lions.

A walk to open the sixth inning signaled the end of the day for freshman starter Luis Miguel Reinoso (Beltsville, Md./High Point) (Beltsville, Md./High Point), and got the game-winning rally started. Another walk, this one by freshman Hilbert Nina De Leon (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) and a wild pitch, gave ASU a pair of runners in scoring position.

After a strikeout, Nina De Leon ran into bad luck with the two-strike blooper that scratched across the game-winning runs. He eluded more damage with a sacrifice out and a fly ball to give Lincoln a chance.

Senior Kashif Hill (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy) opened the seventh with a line-drive single, but the Lions couldn't generate any more offense. Hill led the Lincoln offense with three of the team's six hits.

Senior Elias Beltre (New York, N.Y./LAM International School) (New York, N.Y./LAM International School) opened the scoring with an RBI double in the fourth inning and Lincoln added another run in the frame on an RBI groundout by sophomore DeAndre Bowens (Rock Hill, N.Y. /Monticello) (Rock Hill, N.Y./Monticello).

Albany State tallied a single run in the fourth and took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth.

A sacrifice fly off the bat of Truss brought home the tying in the top of the sixth inning.Reinoso, 0-1, turned in the best start of the young season. He surrendered four earned runs in five innings on five hits with six walks and two hit batters.
