In the third annual Guy A. Sims Short Fiction Competition, Kirk Henderson earned first place with “Record Players,” Marcus Pierre earned second place with “Her,” and Janelle Castellon earned third place with “Luna Por Amor.”

“The award-winning poems and stories can all be found in Volume 11 of Simbaa, our long-running literary magazine,” said Assistant Professor David Amadio, editor in chief of Simbaa and faculty member in the Department of Languages and Literature.

“Hard copies of the magazine are available on the third floor of University Hall, and the electronic version is available on Simbaa’s webpage.”

In addition to the work submitted by those listed above, Volume 11 includes poetry from Ceryce Collie, Angel Wiggins, Bahijah Hassan, Erikka Wesley, Tamarrin Johnson, Shamya Z. Hutchinson, Shyneice Sanders, Jasmine Chisholm, Tiona Lancaster, Jasmine Gayle, Asia Crimm, Tamika Arnold, and Donald Allen. Authors of works of fiction include Frederick Sinclair, Anna Mednikova, and Tadia Nicholson.

The goal of the 56-page publication is to promote and preserve Lincoln's rich literary legacy. Simbaa features poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, drama, screenplays, art, and photography.

Simbaa is published annually in the spring. It features both student-generated work and faculty submissions. Students from all majors may submit items for consideration. Each year, in cooperation with the Department of Languages and Literature, Simbaa hosts a pair of competitions to identify the university’s Poet Laureate and to generate the best fiction writing that Lincoln students have to offer.

Simbaa was founded in 2006 by Assistant Professor David Amadio and the late Professor William Adams.

Students who are interested in acting as the magazine's editorial board—steering both its print and digital incarnations—should e-mail Professor David Amadio about taking a possible spring 2019 course: Print and Digital Publishing. Also, students from all disciplines interested in pursuing the recently developed Creative Writing Track, offered through the Department of Languages and Literature, should likewise contact Professor Amadio, who is available for advising.
