Lumpkin with first career double-double

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa.  – The Lincoln University volleyball team fell to Virginia Union Monday, 25-14, 17-25, 25-12, 25-19, in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association action at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Virginia Union opened the first set by scoring 13 of the first 16 points and wasn't really challenged in securing the nine-point win.
  • Lincoln took the early lead by scoring the first seven points in the second set. The Panthers pulled to within two (13-11), but following a timeout, Lincoln built a cushion with four straight points.
  • As soon as LU built the lead, Virginia Union scored five straight to pull to within one point. But, the Lions secured the victory by scoring eight of the last nine points.
  • Virginia Union scored nine of the first 10 points, and 18 of the first 22 points, for the third set win.
  • The teams traded the first 16 points, and the game was tied at eight until VUU took the lead by scoring five of the next seven points. Lincoln didn't muster more than a two-point run to make the Panthers uncomfortable.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • It was the first time this season, Lincoln played in more than three sets.
  • Four different players finished with double-figure digs, led by freshman Mariah Webster (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) – who finished a career-high 17. Freshman Haley Loper (Middletown, Del./St. Georges Technical) added 11 digs and freshman Erica Taylor (Romulus, MI/Romulus Summit Academy) had 10 digs.
  • Freshman Jaida Lumpkin (Middletown, Del./Middletown) recorded her first career double-double with 16 assists and 11 digs. Junior Tatyana Charles (Easton, Pa./Eastern Area)
  • Erica Taylor (Romulus, MI/Romulus Summit Academy) added a team-high seven kills on 30 attempts with three service aces.
  • Loper and junior Kaiya Lewis (Queens, N.Y./Queens Preparatory Academy) finished with six kills each.
  • Lincoln had a match-high 12 kills in the fourth set, and along with the second set, were the two sets with a positive hitting percentage.

WHAT'S NEXT

  • Lincoln travels to the second CIAA Round-up, traveling to Virginia State. The Lions face Claflin 11 a.m. Saturday, and then Johnson C. Smith 3 p.m. Saturday.
