LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA - Faced with a must-win scenario, the Lincoln University men's basketball trailed for a total of 30 seconds in beating Shaw Wednesday, 68-58, in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association action at Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.
Lincoln trails Shawn, Virginia Union and Bowie by one game in the CIAA's Northern Division race with six games remaining.
The Lions built a 10-point lead midway through the first half, but back-to-back Shaw dunks left the Bears trailing by just two points with 6:43 remaining. However, junior Korey Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./LaSalle Academy) single-handedly boosted the lead by to double digits with back-to-back triples and a circus layup to cap a three-possession scoring bonanza for the guard. It helped stymie the momentum Shaw was attempting to build.
Midway through the second half, LU went on a quick spurt to open up a 17-point lead with 7:32 remaining. However, the Bears had one last gasp in them as Shaw trimmed its deficit to just seven five minutes later.
Defense proved to be defining moment down the stretch as the Orange & Blue held their opponent scoreless over the final two minutes in sealing the win.
Junior Zahrion Blue (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds to go along with 13 points, three assists and a steal.
Freshman Reggie Hudson (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) navigated some foul trouble to lead the team in scoring with 14 points, seven rebounds, a team-high five assists and two steals. Williams finished with 11 rebounds, six rebounds and an assists.
Lincoln (13-6 overall, 6-2 CIAA) travels to Virginia State 4 p.m. Saturday.
