LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa - In a game of runs, the Division I Morgan State Bears tallied the final run en route to beating the Lincoln University men's basketball team, 102-94, in an exempted game Tuesday. The game will count for Morgan State, but not for the Lions.
A 10-0 run late in the second half gave Lincoln its one-point lead with 2:24 remaining. However, Morgan State answered with a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead, and the Bears scored 13 of the final 18 points to secure the victory.
Junior guards Bernard Lightsey (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) and Korey Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./LaSalle Academy) (Brooklyn, N.Y./LaSalle Academy) combined for 50 points with 26 and 24, respectively. Lightsey shot 8-of-16 from the floor, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Williams added six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Junior Zahrion Blue (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) tallied a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, while junior Ja'Zere Noel (Woodbury, N.J./Woodbury) (Woodbury, N.J./Woodbury) added 15 points and eight rebounds.
Despite the result, the Lions grew as a program coming off the mat early.
Morgan State blitzed the Lions by scoring 20 of the first 23 points and held a 14-point lead (28-14) when Lincoln found its sea legs. Four different players scored during a 15-2 run as LU was 5-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the line. Lincoln's defense made it tough on the Bears as the hosts were just 1-of-7 during the run.
However, MSU still held the advantage and seemingly stemmed the tide.
That wasn't going to be the case as Lightsey shot his team to the lead by scoring eight of the team's 12 points during a 12-2 spurt that enabled the Lions to build a six-point lead. Morgan State scored the final five points of the half to send the teams into the locker room tied at 43.
The run would extend to 12-1 as the Bears tallied seven of the first eight points of the second half.
Lincoln got to within two on three separate occasions, only to have an MSU three-pointer extend the lead. But the scrappy bunch of Lions refused to go away. A quick scoring burst pulled Lincoln even at 70, but another Morgan State run – this one 14-4 – pushed the Bears lead to double digits.
As par for the course, Lincoln battled back with a 14-3 run which was part of the aforementioned 10-0 spurt that gave the Lions the lead.
Lincoln (2-0) travels to Niagara 1 p.m. Sunday for another game that will only count for Niagara.
