LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – Two Lincoln University women's basketball players have earned weekly honors from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), the league announced today (December 13, 2021).
Junior forward Jeana Weatherspoon (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) was tapped as the Food Lion Women's Basketball Player of the Week, and freshman Ciani Montgomery (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic Prep) earned Food Lion Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week after helping lead the Lions to an unbeaten week over three games.
Weatherspoon is being honored for the first time in her career from the CIAA and is the second Lincoln women's basketball player to earn Player of the Week honors. Senior Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) picked up the honor for the week ending November 26. She was pivotal in the week, averaging 16 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game while shooting 58 percent from the field. The 5-10 junior forward posted her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Bloomfield and also registered two assists and a block for the week.
"I think Jeana is a phenomenal two-way player who will continue to grow in the program," said Lincoln University women's basketball coach Janice Washington. "She is a player, who over last two to three weeks, has been consistent whether her role has been starting or coming off the bench. She has been great for us."
Montgomery averaged 9.3 points per game, including a 17-point output against Bloomfield, and shot 58 percent from the field for the week. The point guard also totaled five assists and four steals over three games as LU defeated the University of the District of Columbia and Georgian Court along with Bloomfield. She is the first women's basketball player to earn Rookie of the Week honors since Janya Lilly (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Poly Tech) picked up the honors for the week following January 19, 2020.
"Ciani has done a great job in her role over the last week of understanding what we are looking for from our point guards and game management on the court," said Washington. "She's been very good for us off the bench this week and has come in to the game with a certain level of intensity on both sides of the ball."
Lincoln, riding a four-game winning streak, begins CIAA play 5:30 p.m. Thursday, hosting Johnson C. Smith.
