LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA - Three players reached double figures as the Lincoln University women's basketball knocked off West Chester Wednesday, 67-61, in non-conference action in Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.
The victory was the 100th career head coaching win for head coach Janice Washington.
Lincoln's defensive pressure was pivotal as the Lions forced 23 turnovers, leading to 28 points – most of them coming on the fast break The Lions had 26 fast-break points, including 10 in the opening period as the home team got the crowd rocking.
By virtue of a 13-2 run to close the first quarter, LU led by 11 points at the end of one. It wasn't just one player that found the scorebook during the spurt as five different players tallied points. West Chester made a couple quick scoring spurts, but still trailed by nine at the break.
The Golden Rams quickly found its scoring touch with the first nine points of the third quarter to pull even. Lincoln showed the heart of a champion with an immediate response without the need of a timeout.
Senior Joy Morton (Yeadon, Pa./Penn Wood) got a bucket in the point, and then the Lions got out and ran away from the West Chester. Eight more points in the paint, six of which were in transition, and WCU was forced to stem the tide with a timeout.
Both teams struggle to score in the fourth quarter as the teams went four minutes without a point. The home team seemingly had the game secured, up by eight with 80 seconds remaining. But back-to-back turnovers and WCU bucket had the LU lead down to two with 19 seconds remaining.
Senior Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) and Morton knocked down two free throws each to seal the win.
Junior Jeana Weatherspoon (Columbus, Ohio/Northland), who was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time this season, finished with a team-high 14 points and five rebounds, while Brown added 13 points, five rebounds and three steals. Morton recorded 12 points and a pair of blocks. Junior point guard Jade Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends School) pulled down a team-high eight boards with a team-high five assists.
Lincoln (2-1) plays its fourth consecutive PSAC team, hosting regionally-ranked Shepherd 2 p.m. Saturday.
