LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Every Sunday morning, beginning at the heart of Lincoln University’s campus on the U, students in a new service-based organization gather outside for a voluntary trash collection effort.

“We all have a responsibility to make a difference in our own communities,” said Christopher Seyoum, the organization’s secretary and a third-year computer science major from Washington, D.C. “We want to challenge the students of Lincoln to take matters into their own hands.”
The registered student organization, True Hustlers Under God or “THUG”, has embarked on a campus community service initiative this semester. Their most recent activity included a voluntary trash collection effort on October 22, the Sunday following Homecoming.
“With the events we host, students have the ability to see and do selfless acts that can uplift the campus and the surrounding communities.”
The organization was created by Joseph Purnell, a third-year student from Philadelphia majoring in Pan-Africana studies, and Ahmad Hall-Lear, during the 2016-17 year with a goal to improve the morale of campus and encourage students to show more school pride.

Seyoum said he, Purnell, Hall-Lear and others decided that the service-based organization’s mission should be to “positively embody and enlighten our community that creates an atmosphere of brother and sisterhood.”
“These activities can encourage them to generate ideas of their own that they can take with them,” Seyoum said. “Ultimately, they can recycle our efforts and spark a change in the mindsets of their peers.”
Seyoum said the organization wants to be known by the work they do for others and by highlighting those who are doing “commendable” work on campus. He envisions making Lincoln an institution that “produces leaders, not employees.”
The organization's campus advisers are Aqeel Dix and Michael Barrett.
