Preview: Fayetteville State

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. - The Lincoln University football team travels to Fayetteville, N.C. for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association contest 7 p.m. Saturday against Fayetteville State University.  Due to safety protocols at FSU, all fans must be fully vaccinated or show a negative COVID test within the last 72 hours.

ON THE AIR

All five home games can be viewed on the Lincoln University Sports Network. The audio will be provided in conjunction with a partnership HSRN. Preston Steward and Kyle Turner are the two announcers for the game. 

SERIES HISTORY

This marks the sixth meeting since LU brought back football 12 years ago between the two teams. Lincoln has lost the previous five meetings.

THE LAST MEETING

Playing in their third consecutive road contest to start the young season, the Lincoln University football team concluded the non-conference portion of their season with a 51-6 loss to Fayetteville State University on September 22, 2019.
 

Emmett Hunt finished with 195 yards on 11 of 20 passing with one touchdown to lead the offense. Shoye Sampson (Richmond, Va./John Marshall) recorded a team-high four receptions as seven different players hauled in a pass.
 

Devon Cathcart (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) and Vaughn Diggs (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly) finished with seven tackles apiece. 

THE LAST GAME

Lincoln was outscored 28-0 in the second half, falling to Shaw University 41-6 Saturday in the Lions' CIAA opener. 
 

Samuel Okezie-Imo (Owings Mills, Md. /New Town) was responsible for all of the LU points with 31-yard and 23-yard field goals. 
 

Andrew Banks (Atlanta, Ga. /Mays) finished 19-of-31 for 168 yards and an interception. He added 20 rushing yards. Michael Credle had seven receptions for 48 yards. 
 

Defensively, Devon Cathcart (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) led the team with nine tackles - one for loss - and an interception. 

BANKS ON IT

Freshman Andrew Banks (Atlanta, Ga. /Mays) has staked claim to the quarterback position, starting the last two games. Lincoln started the season with three quarterbacks via for the job with Isaiah Wilson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) V starting the first two games. 
 

He is completing 61 percent (38-of-62) of his passes for 346 yards and an interception in his three games of action. 

SHARING THE LOAD

Unlike the quarterback position, where one person has solidified his place at the top of the depth chart - the running back room is still searching for someone to take the helm. 
 

Injuries have played a huge part in the constant shuffling of the room as Elijah Snell (Brooklyn, N.Y./Erasmus Hall), who was the sixth on the depth chart to start the season, is currently the top option. 
 

Snell leads the team with 78 yards on 18 carries, while Ahman Foster-Powell (Henrico, Va./Highland Springs) is second with 75 yards on 28 carries. 

SMOOTH CRIMINALS

The Lincoln defense has recorded an interception in each of the first four games and enters this contest with six picks total. Four different players - Eric Best (Burlington, N.J. /Burlington)Rontay Dunbar (Brooklyn, N.Y. /Freedom)Roosevelt Jordan (Shamong, N.J./Seneca)Devon Cathcart (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional South)Jesse Jackson (Washington, D.C./Dunbar), and Khaleb McRae (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) - all have an interception on the season. 

ROCKING THE CREDLE

Junior receiver Michael Credle, Jr. (Bear, Del./Glasgow) leads the team with 18 receptions for 137 yards through four games. No other player has more than five catches. Rashon Cooke (Sharon Hill, Pa./Lower Merion) has five catches for 74 yards, while Drew Stephens (Newark, N.J. /Abraham Clark) is third on the team with four receptions for 72 yards.

MILITARY ACADEMIES

Lincoln's football roster has four new players that have spent time at Military Prep Schools. Quarterback Andrew Banks (Atlanta, Ga. /Mays) and defensive lineman Darius Sterling (South Chesterfield, Va./Thomas Dale) hail from Fork Union Military Academy, while offensive lineman Shawn Kemmerer (Columbia, Pa./Columbia) and receiver Shannon Squire (North Philadelphia, Pa. /Kensington Creative and Performing Arts) spent time at Valley Forge Military Academy.

SEEING DOUBLE

Two sets of twins will line up for the Lions this season in defensive linemen Evan and Elliot Chavous, and defensive backs Roosevelt and Samuel Bryant (Tucker, Ga. /Tucker)

WELCOME TO COATESVILLE

Due to construction delays, the first four Lincoln University football games will be moved to Coatesville Area High School. The next home game will be 1 p.m. October 16 against Elizabeth City State for Homecoming.

This far, Lincoln is responsible for 4,000 meals as Devon Cathcart (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) and Derrick McCoy (Bridgeton, N.J. /Bridgeton) has two sacks each for the Lions.
