Lincoln University, Pa. – Four Lincoln University faculty and staff recently received professional honors and distinctions.
Gray to Leave on Faculty Fellowship Summer Institute in Israel
Twenty-six professors from universities and colleges across the U.S. including Lincoln University’s Monica Gray, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry & Physics, will soon depart on Jewish National Fund and Media Watch International’s sponsored 2017 Faculty Fellowship Summer Institute in Israel.
Participants will spend 11 days from June 1-14 traveling throughout Israel, meeting Israeli professors from their respective disciplines and with the same or similar research interests, all with the goal of developing collaborations, research projects, co-authoring articles, and establishing exchange programs between faculty and students. The Faculty Fellowship Summer Institute in Israel is a competitive academic fellowship and is a fully paid intensive program to Israel for full time U.S.-based academics from a recognized university or learning institution.
During the trip, the participants will meet Israelis from all walks of life and will hear from a variety of speakers. Throughout their visit, participants will be exposed to contemporary Israeli society, culture, historical sites, the people and the way of life in Israel.
Law-Philmon Named Certified Nurse Educator
As of February 19, Lincoln University’s Nursing Director and Chair Sharvette Law-Philmon, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, CNE, has earned the designation Certified Nurse Educator after meeting strict eligibility criteria and successfully completing a rigorous certification examination developed and administered by the National League for Nursing.
Professor Law-Philmon obtained her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Howard University in Washington, DC. She is the Director and Chair of Lincoln University’s Nursing Program. Professor Law-Philmon’s prior higher education experiences include teaching community health and psychiatric mental health nursing as an adjunct faculty and Associate Course Director.
She has more than 10 years in higher education including leadership positions as an assistant, associate, and interim dean of allied health, emergency services, and nursing. She completed all doctoral coursework in higher education leadership from Grand Canyon University and she is currently writing her dissertation focused on teaching and learning in nursing education at historically black college and universities.
“The NLN’s Academic Nurse Educator Certification program has conferred new visibility and stature upon the academic nursing community that is long overdue,” said Beverly Malone, CEO of the NLN. “Through the certification program, we have made clear to the ranks of higher education that the role of nurse educator is an advanced professional practice discipline with a defined practice setting and demonstrable standards of excellence.”
Faison Earns St. Augustine’s Alumni Award
On May 12, Rev. Frederick T. Faison, the chaplain at Lincoln University, will be honored with the 45 Under 45 Alumni Award during the Stone of Hope Gala at his alma mater, St. Augustine's University, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Faison has more than 15 years in higher education, including eight years at Lincoln as Chaplain and director of Religious Activities. He was chosen as one of 50 to attend Princeton University's Black Theological Institute in 2014. He is author of the book Celebrations of Life, Faith and Songs: a 100 year Chronicle of Music, Prose and Poetry, and has performed various community outreach in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and throughout the United States.
He is pursuing a doctorate in education in higher educational leadership at Union Institute & University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Mujahid Named Advisor of the Year
Ihsan Mujahid ’02 has been awarded the 2016 Advisor of the Year by the Leadership for Queens. Mujahid, a former Miss Lincoln, is the director of Student Life and Development at Lincoln University and the advisor to the royal court.
Mujahid said her experiences as an undergraduate student fueled her passion to serve students as a Student Affairs professional. In 2002, five months post-graduation, she returned to Lincoln as the coordinator of student employment. In 2004, she joined the department of Student Life and Development as a coordinator. By 2007, she was the assistant director and in 2012 she became the interim director of the department. Later that year, she obtained a master's degree in higher education with a concentration in student affairs from Drexel University. She was promoted to director in 2016.
Since 2004, Mujahid has worked with several courts and a multitude of students. In that time, she has played many roles and said she is proud to have many successes. She has earned bragging rights as she proudly advised and coached a first-runner up, second-runner up, top-five finalist, and top-10 finalist for the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Queen's Competition. She has also had a first runner-up for the Mister HBCU and Miss CIAA competitions.
As advisor, she implores her kings and queens to be themselves but to understand that from the time they attend the interest meeting for such positions, they are in the spotlight. The best piece of advice that she has for students in leadership, especially when competing, is there is always someone who may need the opportunity more than they want it.
"Winning is not everything, in all of the conferences and competitions attended, if you get nothing from the opportunity, you have missed the entire experience," Ihsan said.
