LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Three Lincoln University faculty members recently received professional honors and distinctions.
Semychayevsky Publishes in Science Journals
Andriy Semychayevsky
Andriy Semychayevsky, a physics and engineering professor, has contributed to three academic journals recently. In Organic Electronics, Semychayevskyy and his fellow researchers examined the possibilities of light-trapping in organic ultrathin polymer solar cells. After exhaustive computational modeling carried out by Semychayevskyy at Lincoln, the Yale and Princeton researchers concluded that materials from nature, such as diatom frustules, can be incorporated into energy conversion devices in a completely new way, distinctly different from previous work.
In the spring, Semychayevskyy published an invited article in the Journal of Modern Education Review. His paper Initiation of Undergraduate Electrical Engineering Research at Lincoln University describes recent faculty-student research activities on campus. Specifically, it describes connections between the National Science Foundation sponsored faculty and student research in engineering science and physics and modern pedagogy, broadly known as ‘integrated learning’.
In the summer, Semychayevskyy’s research was published in the first volume of Frontiers of Science and Theory. Semychayevskyy’s research was supported by the Department of Energy through the 2016 and 2017 Visiting Faculty Programs. In his paper Numerical Approaches for Space Charge Calculations in Intense Proton Beams, Semychayevskyy and researchers from the Fermi National Accelerator Lab in Batavia, Illinois compared the accuracy and convergence rate of two popular algorithms used to solve the Poisson’s equation self-consistently, using realistic distributions of protons in beams. Semychayevskyy’s 2017 results on particle beam electromagnetics are being prepared for publication.
Edwards Contributes to Popular Financial Website
Kennie Edwards
Kennie Edwards, an assistant professor in the Department of Business and Entrepreneurial Studies and certified public accountant, recently contributed to WalletHub’s Ask an Expert. WalletHub is a widely recognized platform for individuals looking for personal financial advice and has been featured on national platforms such as Fox Business, Bloomberg, and The Wall Street Journal.
Ask the Experts is a resource on WalletHub available to consumers seeking financial guidance from highly qualified financial experts. Edward’s feature answered questions on secured and unsecured credit cards for those with poor credit. Throughout his written commentary, Edwards reviewed the difference between secured and unsecured credit cards and the pros and cons of both.
Snider Accepted into Peer Mentoring Program
Brenda Snider
Brenda Snider, an instructional technology support specialist in Academic Technology Support, was accepted into the 2017-18 Cross-Institutional ID2ID Peer Mentoring Program for instructional designers. This program is co-sponsored by Penn State University and EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI). Through this program, Snider partnered with Andrew Mantuano of Bryn Mawr College and has been collaborating with him since the program began in July.
This program is designed to help participants grow professionally through focusing on common areas of interest such as: faculty development, academic transformation, digital literacies, accessibility, assessment, open education, and learning spaces. Currently, there are over 250 participants in the program that represent a variety of institutions such as community colleges, public and private universities, professional schools, as well as private and commercial instructional designers.
In addition to her acceptance into the ID2ID program, Snider has been accepted to present at the 15th annual Distance Learning Association Conference and Expo at the University of Sciences in Philadelphia. The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on December 19. The title of her presentation is Connecting with Buddies: Insights into Collaborating with Colleagues from Different Institutions.
