Horne to Participate in Gospel Music Workshop

Dr. Camilla Horne, director of the Lincoln University Concert Choir, is set to teach at the 51st annual James Cleveland Gospel Music Workshop of America July 14 – 21 in Atlanta.  This will mark Horne’s 20th year as a faculty member at the GMWA convention.  This year Horne will teach a course on vocal health for gospel singers and organize vocal labs for choir members.  Horne will also work as soprano and alto section leader and perform with the Thurston Frazier Chorale.

“It’s always a pleasure sharing my experiences and knowledge with fellow musicians and singers,” said Horne.

The Gospel Music Workshop of America is an annual assembly of inter-denominational musicians, singers, and performers from around the country and has a current enrollment of over 10,000 members.

Faculty Members Join Lincoln Students at Temple University for Summer Research

Dr. Patricia A. Joseph, dean of faculty, is serving as the co-principal investigator for a Commonwealth Universal Research Enhancement grant also known as CURE. Denise Brown, an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology and Human Services, serves as the project coordinator.

Three Lincoln University students are currently participating in a summer internship at Temple University sponsored by the CURE grant .

Throughout the internship, sophomores Tarik Tsegaye and Ayomide Ogunsakin along with recent graduate Ceryce Collie ’18 will receive intensive research training, mentoring, supplemental didactics, and hands-on learning experiences.

“It is an honor to be part of a project where such innovative and critical research is taking place with Lincoln University students at the forefront,” said Joseph. “This kind of initiative and training opportunity aligns nicely with the current strategic direction of Lincoln University where academics along with high impact practices serve as the focus for student success.”

Chikwem Honored by YMWIC Foundation

Dr. John O. Chikwem, a distinguished professor in the Department of Biology was honored by Young Men and Women in Charge at its 8th annual scholarship banquet held at the Valley Forge Sheraton in May.

Chikwem received the Educational Leadership Award for post-secondary education for his work hosting YMWIC leadership summer camps and monthly STEM weekend activities for middle school students. For his outreach, Chikwem also received a citation from the Board of Commissioners of the County of Chester and a congratulatory resolution from the Pennsylvania State Senate.

YMWIC’s mission is to empower and prepare economically disadvantaged and historically underrepresented youth to excel and become leaders in STEM careers through academic tutoring, mentoring and financial assistance programs.
