LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – Since 2011, 22 Lincoln University students have participated in Vira I. Heinz Program for Women in Global Leadership and have received over $150,000 in scholarships.

The Vira I. Heinz Program for Women in Global Leadership prepares women for tomorrow's global challenges by offering a unique opportunity for international experiences, leadership development, and community service. Universities and colleges across Pennsylvania participate in the VIH Program. Three women from each institution are admitted into the program and receive a scholarship of at least $5,000 to put toward the cost of an international experience of their choosing.

Successful applicants meet in Pittsburgh, PA for the Spring Pre-Departure Retreat. The activities provide participants with opportunities to better prepare for their time abroad through developing global perspectives and international competencies as well as strategies for maximizing their cultural education while abroad and engaging their leadership skills in their communities.

After spending the summer abroad, students debrief at the University of Pittsburgh during the Fall Retreat where they reflect on their international experiences with emphasis on their experiences with gender and leadership designed to develop their leadership skills further.

At the end of the program, students participate in a Community Engagement Experience.  This experience centers on the concept “Think Globally; Act Locally”. VIH cohorts are charged with forming a team and using their new-found leadership skills, knowledge, and passions to impact their local communities in a positive, innovative way.

To participate in the program, Lincoln University female students; must be sophomores or juniors, have at least a 3.0 GPA and have never traveled outside the U.S. Application deadline is November 1, 2018.
