Baseball sweeps Virginia State

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA  – The Lincoln University baseball team picked up their first two wins of the season, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Virginia State in Etterick, VA.

GAME ONE: Lincoln 7, Virginia State 6
Lincoln scored six runs to comeback to beat Virginia State in the opener as junior Alex Jones (Bear Del./Appoquinimink) drew a bases-loaded walk. Sophomore Jefry Azcona (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) opened the scoring in the inning with a two-run single, and sophomore Damaal Sands (Nassau, Bahamas/Montverde Academy (FL)) added another two-run single to pull the Lions to within a run. Freshman Drew Darby (Union, N.J.) scored Sands with the tying run.

Virginia State took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning and led 6-1 following a three-spot in the sixth.

Azcona finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI, while freshman Drew Darby (Union, N.J.) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Sophomore Josiah Lara (Plant City Fla./Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy), 1-1, earned the win in relief, while freshman Connor Jones earned the first save of his career – pitching a scoreless seventh with one strikeout. Freshman Gabriel Sanchez (Anthony, N.M/Anthony) allowed three runs on three hits over five innings with seven strikeouts.

GAME TWO: Lincoln 9, Virginia State 4
Lincoln recorded just three hits, but scored in four of seven innings to complete the doubleheader sweep of the Trojans.

Freshman Miguel Agramonte (Fallston, Md./Fallston), freshman Drew Darby (Union, N.J.), senior Justin McClain (New Castle Del./Del Castle Tech) and Azcona all scored two runs each, while junior DeAndre Bowens (Rock Hill, N.Y./Monticello) had a pair of RBI. Seven of the nine starters tallied RBI in the victory.

Senior Carvonte Williams, 1-1, allowed one run on three hits in five innings of work to pick up the victory. He struck out eight with two walks.

Lincoln (2-4) returns to the diamond with a non-conference doubleheader noon Tuesday against Newberry.
