WBB Preview: Winston-Salem State

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA - Lincoln University women's basketball team begins their quest for the elusive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association crown 4:30 p.m. against Winston-Salem State at Royal Farms Arena.

TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Lincoln comes into the CIAA Tournament with a 11-9 record in 20 tournament games. The Lions are 1-1 against Winston-Salem State, including an opening round loss to the Rams, 63-59, in the 2020 CIAA Tournament. 

NORTH DIVISION CHAMPIONS
The Lincoln University women's basketball team claimed their first-ever CIAA Northern Division Championship and will enter the tournament as the top seed.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Fifth-year senior was named the CIAA Player of the Year and is a member of the All-CIAA Backcourt. It's back-to-back Player of the Year honors for the LU women's basketball team as Kwanza Murray earned the honor following the 2019-20 season. The CIAA canceled the 2020-21 season. 

Brown, a career 1,000-point scorer, is leading the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) with 17.1 points per game. She is second in the conference, and 19th nationally, making 87.18 percent (102-of-117) of her free throws this season, and made a CIAA-best 102 made free throws. She leads the CIAA with 2.4 three-pointers per game. 

Senior Kryshell Gordy (Chester, Pa./Ursuline Academy (Del.)) was named as a frontcourt player on the All-CIAA team. 

VARIABLE STARTERS
Mainly due to injuries, Lincoln has rolled out 12 different starting lineups this season, with two quintet getting more than four games together. The lineup of Jaleesa Lanier (Easton, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic)Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin)Jade Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends School)Shantel Cheeks (Washington D.C./Rock Creek Christian Academy (Harcum College)) and Kryshell Gordy (Chester, Pa./Ursuline Academy (Del.)) has started the last two games together and five total. Lincoln is now 12-3 with Lanier starting at point guard. 

ATLANTIC REGIONAL POLL
Lincoln is the lone CIAA school in the NCAA Regional Polls, coming in at 10th in the Atlantic Region. 

TRANSITION POINTS
As a team, the Lions are at their best when they can gain points in transition. The Lions are 16-1 when they register at least 16 fast-break points and just 3-6 when they fail to record 16 points. 

FROM DOWNTOWN
Lincoln is second in the CIAA with 5.3 three-pointers per game and a league-high 129 total three-pointers. However, the Lions are eighth in percentage, making 28.3 percent. 

DROPPING DIMES
Junior Jade Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends School) is second in the CIAA with 3.7 assists per game and is second with a 1.5 assist to turnover ratio. 

PREVIOUS MEETING
A 27-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters provided Lincoln with enough room to cruise to the 82-55 win over Winston-Salem State on December 18.

Junior Jade Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends School) recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Fifth-year senior Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) led the way with 18 points and five rebounds with two assists, and fifth-year senior JoyMorton added 17 points with three rebounds and two steals.

Freshman Ciani Montgomery (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic Prep) came off the bench for 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
