LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA ~ Lincoln University will host 30 graduate students coming to the United States for two weeks for further education as part of this year’s Fulbright Pre-Academic Summer Program. The students will arrive at Lincoln on July 22.
The students assigned to Lincoln will be involved in a program that focuses on English language and refinement of academic skills, Fulbright program goals, orientation to U.S. culture, survival skills for graduate students, and cross-cultural orientation.
The program is divided into two sessions daily. In the first, faculty will help facilitate the transition from home-country academic conventions to American academic conventions in written and oral communication (Standard American English). The program also covers discipline-based research paradigms (library and internet), computing skills, and generally with relevant customs of academic culture in American higher education, including different aspects of graduate workload and faculty expectations from graduate students.
Afternoon sessions will concentrate on cross-cultural awareness forums that will provide opportunities for Fulbright students to develop an understanding of the cultural values and cultural diversity of American society.
According to Constance Lundy, program and logistics director of the Fulbright program at Lincoln University, “The pool of students assigned to Lincoln’s pre-academic program will be from 23 countries. Most participants will not have previously studied at U.S. institutions of higher education, and many of them have never been to the United States.”
The students will visit the Amish country, Longwood Gardens, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. There is also a host family component where the Fulbright students will spend one day visiting with Lincoln University and West Grove/Avondale Rotary Club families in the area.
The Department of State selects 340 students to participate in the Fulbright program, which serves as a preparatory experience for students before they enroll in U.S. institutions to begin graduate studies in the fall.
