Lincoln University, PA – Lincoln University’s poetry club, I.S.P.I.T, Infinite Supply of Passionate and Intense Talent, will be hosting their third annual spoken word showcase “Verbal Riot: The Last Word” on Tuesday, March 1.

Held at the International Cultural Center, on the main campus of Lincoln University, the program will feature performances from members of I.S.P.I.T and poets who have been featured on HBO’s “Brave New Voices” series, such as Jamillah Harris.  Harris is also a member of Spoken Word Sketch Group and Lyrical Playground, both located in Philadelphia, Pa.

Special appearances also include:
Jeaninne Kayembe, featured on HBO’s “Brave New Voices” series in 2008;
Kavi, member of Philadelphia Youth Poetry Movement, also featured on HBO’s “Brave New Voices”;
Vision, member of Spoken Soul 215, a Philly based spoken word artist collective;
Ceez Live, featured at the Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe and the Bowery Poetry Club.  Ceez won second place in the 2009 Knicks Poetry Slam;
Brandi Hargette, magazine journalism major at Temple University and member of the Temple poetry group, Babel;
Amun Miraaj, also known as Phiyhim Univers‘El, songwriter, writer, poet, MC and vocalist.

Originally named “The Tolson Society,” after Lincoln graduate Melvin B. Tolson ’23, who is known not only for his work as a debate team coach, but also for his poetry.  This group was established over two decades ago.

In September 2008, a new breed of students decided that poetry was their passion and Lincoln University was in need of an awakening through art; namely, spoken word poetry.  Two semesters strong, I. S.P.I.T. has performed in Philadelphia at “Jus Words” open mic night, in Washington DC at “Busboys and Poets,” and at West Chester University as featured poets for their first poetry showcase.

The program is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are being sold in advance for $7, two for $12.  Tickets are  $10 at the door. For more information contact Rienne Scott at (267) 986-7776.
