Lincoln University, PA – This October, 13 students in the Mass Communications Center of Excellence took part in the first installment of a new professional development program developed exclusively with Lincoln University. The NBC 10 Academy, in partnership with Philadelphia’s Black Public Relations Society (PBPRS), is a two day workshop designed to prepare majors for high quality internships and jobs in broadcasting and public relations.
The Academy was hosted by executives, administrators and producers from Philadelphia’s NBC 10 and major public relations organizations. Experts such as NBC 10’s Vice President of News, Chris Blackman, worked with students one-on-one, and critiqued their writing and video samples. They also provided coaching in professional imaging, interviewing and resume building.
To qualify for the competitive program students had to be Lincoln University Juniors or Seniors majoring in Mass Communications, and have a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.
According to Kathy Johnson, NBC 10’s Manager of Sales Service and Traffic Operations, the students are not the only ones expected to benefit from the new program. “The NBC 10 Academy is an attempt to expose students, who show academic and community excellence, the ‘how-tos’ in this fast paced, highly competitive industry,” said Johnson. “Our return on investment is creating a pool of individuals who represent the communities they report on with a fresh and equally diverse lens.”
Senior Khendall Beale attended the Academy and found it to be an “amazing experience.” “I received the once in a lifetime opportunity to get counseled by the top executives of NBC 10,” said Beale.
The NBC 10 Academy is now being developed into an annual program offered to Lincoln’s communications majors. For more information on this program contact Ashley Sims, media manager, asims@lincoln.edu.
