Dr. Emery Petchauer, Education Department
Emery Petchauer is Assistant Professor of Education at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, the first historically Black university in the United States. A former high school teacher, his research focuses on the cultural dimensions of teaching and learning in urban schools and universities as well as teacher development and licensure. The recipient of numerous teaching awards, his work has been published in some of the most prestigious education journals including Review of Educational Research, Urban Education, and Journal of College Student Development.
Dr. Petchauer has made over 50 research presentations across the United States as well as conducted research in international locations such as the United Kingdom and Brazil. Dr. Petchauer is also a leading authority on the intersections of hip-hop culture and education. He is the author of Hip-Hop Culture in College Students’ Lives: Elements, Embodiment, and Higher Edutainment (Routledge Press), which is the first scholarly study of hip-hop culture on college campuses. The book has received popular attention from the Metropaper in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston.
He is also a regular blogger for Diverse: Issues in Higher Education where he provides commentary on current educational topics. In addition to these academic pursuits, Dr. Petchauer has over a decade of experience organizing hip-hop spaces/events from San Diego to Philadelphia to Switzerland. He is one of the central organizers for The Gathering, the longest-running all-ages hip-hop culture night in Philadelphia.
Ms. Shakeerah Plummer, Junior, Majors: English and Secondary Education
Shakeerah Enid Plummer a Philadelphia, PA native and Overbrook High School alum is currently a junior at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. She is a double major in English and Secondary Education. She currently holds the position as President of the Education Club at Lincoln University with the responsibility of club planning, fundraisers, and community awareness. In addition, she also is the First Vice-President of National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), Lincoln Section. Ms. Plummer is no stranger to adversity or hardship; a child of drug-addicted parents Shakeerah was raised by her grandparents. When she first began high school she received very low scores in a majority of her classes but had a support system at Overbrook High that helped her change that and become an honor roll student her last two years.
During the three years Ms. Plummer has attended Lincoln University, she has accomplished many things: Class of 2013 President, Vice President Education Club, Member National Council of Negro Women (NCNW,) Sophomore Lincoln Woman of the Year, and has started a mentoring program for the freshmen ladies called Sister to Sister. Aside from being active on Lincoln’s campus, she is also a member of Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society and President of Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society, Tau Zeta Chapter. Along with her many other leadership responsibilities she sits on the board for the School of Social Sciences as a student representative. Ms. Plummer has a 3.429 cumulative grade point average. She truly lives up to the definition of a hard worker.
During her spare time and breaks during her college schooling Shakeerah volunteers at Overbrook High School as a teaching assistant. In a recent interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer Shakeerah explained why she volunteers at her alma mater, “Giving back is very important. I want the students now to see that dreams do come true if you work and study hard.”
An interesting fact about Shakeerah is she has not missed an Honors Convocations since becoming a student at Lincoln University and states, “I call it taking advantage of the second chance God has given me.”
