LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – Baseball legend and philanthropists Hank and Billye Aaron, singer and songwriter, LEDISI, Queen of Gospel Music Pastor Shirley Caesar and Aramark Board Chairman Joseph Neubauer will be among those honored Sunday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. at Lincoln University of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s First Annual Lion’s Awards Program at the prestigious Union League Governor’s Ballroom in Philadelphia.
“It is only fitting that we, Lincoln University, the nation’s oldest degree granting institution for African Americans affiliates itself among those who have established a legacy of excellence,” said Dr. Robert R. Jennings, who will be inaugurated as 13thPresident of Lincoln University during a formal ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 22. “The Annual Lion’s Award Program offers a great opportunity to recognize and honor the tremendous contributions of these extraordinary individuals across their various fields of endeavor.”
Other honorees include: Humanitarianism – Carol Ware, President, 1675 Foundation;Athletics – Clive Terrelonge, ’94, Two-time Olympian and 1995 IAAF World Indoor Championship Gold Medalist for Jamaica; Education – Dr. Ivory Nelson, 12th President of Lincoln University; Law – Robert L. Archie, ’68, Esq., Partner, Duane Morris, LLP; and for Military Service – Lillian E. Fishburne, ’71, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy (ret.).
The black tie awards program caps four days of inaugural activities for Dr. Jennings, who chose instead to forgo an Inaugural gala for an event that not only recognizes and honors others, but whose proceeds benefit scholarships to Lincoln University students.
Members of the program’s Host Committee include: Frank Giordano, Chairman; the Honorable Vincent J. Hughes, Co-Chair; Sheldon M. Bonovitz, the Honorable Carolyn T. Comitta, Dr. Clifford E. DeBaptiste, Bishop David G. Evans, the Honorable Dwight Evans, the Honorable Terence Farrell, the Honorable John Farrell, the Honorable John Lawrence, Harry Lewis, Jr., Jerry Lopes, George C. McGriff, Jr., the Honorable Cherelle L. Parker, the Honorable Dominic Pileggi, Gary Rawlings, Donn G. Scott and Gary Smith.
Tickets for the event are $100.
Lincoln University of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, founded in 1854 as the nation’s first historically Black degree-granting institution, combines the elements of a liberal arts and science-based undergraduate curriculum along with select graduate programs to meet the needs of those living in a highly-technological and global society. Today, the University enrolls a diverse student body of approximately 2,000 men and women. Internationally recognized for preparing and producing world class leaders such as Thurgood Marshall, the first African American U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Lillian Fishburne, the first African American woman promoted to Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy, Langston Hughes, the noted poet, Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana and Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of Nigeria.
