The 2013-14 SGA Officers with University President Dr. Robert R. Jennings
LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – The Lincoln University’s first all-university convocation saw a transition in student leadership as members of the 2013-2014 Student Government Association were sworn in at the International Cultural Center earlier this month.
The new officers’ slate include SGA President Winnie-Mae Washington, Secretary Alicia Robinson, Treasurer Michael Frazier, Vice President of External Affairs Lowell Howard and Vice President of Internal Affairs Nobuko Maybin.
“The number one issue in college that we deal with is transition,” said Washington, who addressed students about life changes and recognizing their own potential. “At any given moment you must sacrifice who you are to become and who you want to be.”
Washington referenced The Lincoln University’s new branding slogan, ‘Where Being The First Matters,’ challenging the group to reflect on its implied meaning and the need to embrace the institution’s legacy as the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black College & University (HBCU).
“I was happy Winnie touched on what we have to do to show others that we are the first because Lincoln deserves it’s just due.” said Dora Theluscat, a senior health science major and third-year cheerleader.
Said Washington: “If we are to show people who we are and what we are capable of, we must be consciously aware that we are indeed the first. People will not see us the way we are. People will see us the way we present ourselves. We are who we are. And we are proud of ourselves. Who are we? We are The Lincoln University.”
The Lincoln University, founded in 1854 as the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black College and University (HBCU), combines the elements of a liberal arts and science-based undergraduate curriculum along with select graduate programs to meet the needs of those living in a highly-technological and global society. Today, the University enrolls a diverse student body of approximately 2,000 men and women. Internationally recognized for preparing and producing world class leaders such as Thurgood Marshall, the first African American U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Lillian Fishburne, the first African American woman promoted to Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy, Langston Hughes, the noted poet, Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana and Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of Nigeria.
