Through the Looking Glass: A Visual art exhibition
Through the Looking Glass is an exhibition of photographic works by Kyle Gordon and Professor Christina Kerns exploring the complication of internal and external perception. Both artists developed work during the summer of 2019 with support from a Lincoln University, Andrew W. Mellon Grant. Through The Looking Glass references the adventures of Alice in Wonderland as she attempts to understand her place in a world that is logically and perspectively in reverse.
Each project began with photographs taken during day trips to locations in the Philadelphia region, such as, The Grounds for Sculpture, The Philadelphia Zoo and The Mercer Museum. Kerns and Gordon then worked in the studio manipulating images and experimenting with printing techniques to develop distinct bodies of work. Each artist was influenced by aesthetics and concepts related to Neo-Noir Films created from the 1970’s - 90’s such as: deep blacks, vibrant colors, distorted perspectives and tight framing. The work in each series evokes a similar complexity of personal identity as in this film genre through reflection, ephemerality, concealment and disguise.
Opening Reception is November 19 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the ICC Lobby.
