Black History Awards Convocation 2020 - Keynote
ESPN Anchor Jay Harris will be the guest speaker at the LU Black History Convocation on February 13 at 12:30 p.m. in the ICC. This is a student-led program and interview. The campus and community are invited to attend.
About Jay Harris
Jay Harris joined ESPN in February 2003 as a Sports Center anchor, and is most often seen as anchor of the Saturday and Sunday morning editions of the program. Harris also often anchors the Monday edition of Sports Center Coast to Coast at noon ET, especially during the NFL season. Harris came to ESPN from WPGH-TV in Pittsburgh, Pa. where he was a news anchor/reporter. Harris has more than 25 years of experience in television and radio news, including morning news anchor at WAMO-FM and national news at American Urban Radio Networks, both in Pittsburgh, and at WOWI-FM in Norfolk, Va. His work outside of sports included the trapped coal miners near Pittsburgh, and, while in Virginia, the fatal USS Iowa battleship explosion.
A native of Norfolk, Va., Harris was graduated from Old Dominion University with a bachelor’s degree in speech communication in 1987. In 2003 he was honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University. In 2004, he was the keynote speaker for Old Dominion’s 100th commencement ceremony. Among his other honors, Harris was part of Sports Center’s Sports Emmy-winning efforts in 2004 and 2005, and a recipient of the Silver World Medal from the New York Festival Awards, Robert L. Vann Award from the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation, and an EXCEL Award from the Hampton Roads Black Media Professionals. Harris enjoys playing bass guitar and is an avid golfer. He scored an ace in a charity tournament in Las Vegas in 2014, winning a car in the process. Jay Harris is a Norfolk, Virginia native and an American journalist who has worked for ESPN since February 2003. Jay currently calls late night his home, seen primarily on the 11pm and midnight eastern editions of SportsCenter, and sometimes on the west coast Sportscenter from Los Angeles. Jay has hosted a variety of shows during his tenure at ESPN, including Sportscenter, Outside The Lines, NFL Live, Baseball Tonight, Cold Pizza, First Take, Friday Night Fights, and ESPN Sports Saturday on ABC. Harris is married with 2 children and is a member of the Nu Theta chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
