LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lincoln University baseball team continues to battle through the Eastern Coast Conference schedule, only to come up painfully short. The Lions battled back from an early four-run deficit before falling to Mercy College, 12-10, Saturday.
Lincoln falls to 4-16 overall, 4-10 in the ECC, while Mercy improves to 17-8 overall, 13-4 inside the conference.
Senior Max Guadalupe (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunication Arts) (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunications) gave LU the early lead with a double in the top of the first inning. Mercy combated the deficit with three runs in the first and two more in the third.
Once again Guadalupe was in the middle of the scoring for the Lions as he scored in the fourth inning via a sacrifice fly by senior Sheldon Johnson (Pittsburgh Pa./Woodland Hills), and then drove home a pair of runs with a single in the fifth to pull Lincoln to within 6-4. He also walked with bases loaded in seventh for the first run in a game-tying, three-run inning.
Unfortunately, the good vibes didn't last long as the Mustangs mounted a game-defining two-out rally in the bottom of the frame. A two-out single, followed by back-to-back walks, preceded a grand slam.
Lincoln didn't fold, however.
The Lions tacked on three runs in the eighth and had the tying run on second with just one out. But they couldn't push across the equalizer.
Guadalupe reached in all five plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with one run scored, a double, a career-high five RBI, and a pair of walks. Freshman Jefry Azcona (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two walks, while senior Kashif Hill (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy) scored a career-high four times with a double and an RBI.
Freshman Alex Jones (Bear Del./Appoquinimink) (Bear, Del./Appoquinimink) added a pair of RBI.
Lincoln has a quick turnaround, traveling to Molloy College for an ECC doubleheader Tuesday.
