Lincoln University will host the 2018 Summer Transportation Institute for secondary school students from July 9, 2018 to July 27, 2018. The purpose of the Institute is to create awareness and stimulate interest in secondary school students to take full advantage of the career opportunities that exist in the transportation industry. The STI program, sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, is open to students attending public and private secondary schools in the Eastern Pennsylvania region. The Institute is an extremely intense and structured learning opportunity for youth in the secondary school systems in Pennsylvania.

Curriculum

The curriculum will expose students to all modes of transportation and adventures such as highway design, transportation of people and cargo, inter-modal transport systems, laws, regulations, safety, security, and career opportunities. In addition, students will participate in computer training, field trips and group projects.

Scholarships

Approximately twenty-four (24) 12-14 year old rising seventh, eighth and ninth grade students will receive full scholarships to participate in the three-week summer program. Scholarships include: Tuition, workshops and handouts, room and board, facility usage, equipment and supplies, travel (field trips), lab fees, and speakers.

Eligibility & Selection

Notification of scholarship awards will be made by the Summer Transportation Institute to each of the selected students. The following criteria will be used in the selection of scholarship recipients.

Students must:

  • Be between the ages of 11 and 14 prior to the start of the program.
  • Be in the 7th, 8th or 9th grade for the 2018-2019 schoolyear.
  • Have completed or be qualified to enroll in Pre-Algebra for the 2018-2019 school year.
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (minimum)
  • Have an interest in transportation, engineering, science, technology or math related career.
  • Have at least two letters of recommendation.
  • Provide standardized test score(s).
  • Provide a one-page essay. (Why student wants to participate in the STI program and how it can assist in meeting individual career goals.)
  • Provide transcript, very essential.

  • Lincoln University Health Services Physical Examination Form (Mandatory. Complete front and back)

The selection team will also consider the geographical location of applicants to ensure representation from all regions. Applicants may be interviewed before selection is made.

Please consult with your science, mathematics and technology education teachers for the names of potential students who may qualify for the Institute.
