LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA ~ The Kennett Symphony of Chester County has invited Lincoln University junior and Music Education major with a minor in Business Management, Abdul Barr Khaliq to perform as a soloist on December 6, 2008 for the 68th Annual Sounds of the Season concert. Mr. Khaliq’s invitation was extended for his laudable performance in a regional contest, in which he placed in the top two.
As a child growing up in Harlem, Abdul Barr Khaliq’s biggest dream was to become a performer. Mr. Khaliq began taking piano lessons under the direction of his father at the age of four. He later continued his studies at the Harlem School of the Arts, where his love for music truly began to blossom. He also attended the Choir Academy of Harlem where he graduated as Salutatorian in 2005. As a member of the Boys Choir of Harlem, he started as a soprano, then an alto, and is currently a tenor. He was fortunate enough to perform several solos in the choir, plus work as an assistant choreographer. Through his membership in the choir, he attended the prestigious program at The Boston University Tanglewood Institute for two consecutive summers on a scholarship.
Since Mr. Khaliq’s years as a choir member he has had the privilege of performing and/or recording with many world renowned artists, such as: Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Regina Bell, Lionel Richie, P. Diddy, Destiny’s Child, Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, Vanessa Williams, Queen Latifah, Mase, Kanye West. He has performed for notables/humanitarians such as: President Bush, President Clinton, Mayor Bloomberg, Mayor Giulliani, Mayor David Dinkins, Congressman Charles Rangel, Honorable Nelson Mandela, Pope John Paul II, Cantor Fitzgerald, Lockheed Martin, Greater New Entertainment, Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee, John Travolta, Lena Horne, Carmen Delavalade, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Vienna Boys Choir, Vienna Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Seiji Ozawa, Kurt Masur, John Williams, Yo-Yo Ma, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and Jessye Norman.
Throughout his tenure as a vocalist, Khaliq has traveled the fifty states, plus Holland, Israel, Japan, Vienna, Canada, Puerto Rico and Turkey. He has been recording on a solo level for two years and has completed a compilation of several songs, many of which he has written, some of which he co-wrote and produced with others. Mr. Khaliq is a singer, songwriter, vocal arranger, pianist, dancer and actor pursuing his childhood dream.
