LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA ~ Lincoln University President Ivory V. Nelson announced that Kathleen J. Butler Hayes, a 1989 graduate, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees as an alumni representative. Her term on the university’s governing board expires in 2010.
Hayes is currently on special assignment with the School District of Philadelphia. She has dual certifications from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the areas of elementary teacher education and school library media specialization.
For the past 11 years, Hayes has worked for the School District of Philadelphia as a librarian. Additionally, she has served as an assistant professor of education and psychology librarian at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and has directed the Curriculum Instructional Media Center at Kentucky State University.
Hayes, who earned her bachelor’s degree in three years from Lincoln University, received a master of education from Cheyney University and a master of library science from the University of Pittsburgh.
Her professional affiliations include Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society, the American Library Association (ALA) and the Association of Philadelphia School Librarians (APSL). She also serves on the School District of Philadelphia Book Review and Book Fair Committees.
Hayes was honored with the Lincoln University Founder’s Day Award in 2005 and with the Association of Philadelphia School Librarians Irene Garson Librarian of the Year Service Award in 2006.
She is a life member of the Alumni Association of Lincoln University as well as a member in the Philadelphia Chapter of the Baptist Ministers’ Wives and Ministers’ Widows Union.
In 2006, Hayes and her husband, Tracey, a 1987 graduate, established the Langston Hughes Memorial Library Endowment Fund. Money from the fund will enhance services provided to patrons of the library.
Hayes has written articles on academic curriculum and instructional media library centers.
