LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA ~ Lincoln University President Ivory V. Nelson acknowledged students who have excelled academically at the 2007 Honors Convocation in Manuel Rivero Hall on Wednesday, noting that the university has what it takes to make them successful in their education and also in their lives.
“Lincoln University has an environment that makes students succeed,” Dr. Nelson said. “We have an outstanding faculty and staff, and the students who are recognized today have the fire, vigor and skills to change the world.”
President Nelson told the students that there are three major events that take place on college campuses. He said, “The first is the first day you visit the campus and decide that you will attend the school. The second is the recognition you receive for what you’ve done, and the third is when you walk across the stage on commencement.”
President Nelson highlighted the fact that, even though Lincoln has an alumni body of only about 15,000, many of them have had significant impact in the nation and around the world.
“Lincoln is all about academics,” he said. “We provide everything for a student to succeed in the classroom and beyond. You are among the few who will impact the world. You are extra special, and if you continue doing what you are doing, anything is possible and anything can happen.”
President Nelson thanked parents, guardians and friends for the contributions and sacrifices they are making to ensure that the students succeed.
Meanwhile, Dr. Grant. D. Venerable, vice president for academic affairs, congratulated and praised the students for their exemplary work in the classroom.
“To be honored means receiving recognition for your stellar accomplishments,” Dr. Venerable said. “As academic leaders, you will be the dominant factor on the campus of Lincoln University.”
This annual event, traditionally held to salute students and to recognize them for academic success, drew the largest crowd of all honors convocations held in the school’s history.
Founded in 1854, Lincoln University is a premier, historically Black University that combines the best elements of a liberal arts and sciences-based undergraduate core curriculum and selected graduate programs to meet the needs of those living in a highly technological and global society. The University is nationally recognized as a major producer of African Americans with undergraduate degrees in the physical sciences (biology, chemistry and physics); computer and informational sciences; biological and life sciences. Lincoln has an enrollment of 2,423 undergraduate and graduate students.
