Double-doubles for Brown, Weatherspoon

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA - Less than 18 hours after securing a victory in the state of New Jersey, the Lincoln University women's basketball team came home to secure a victory against a team from the state of New Jersey.

Two players tallied double-doubles as the Lions came out blazing to record the 91-66 win over Bloomfield College Saturday inside the confines of Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.

Junior Jeana Weatherspoon (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) posted her first double-double in a Lincoln uniform, and her fourth in her collegiate career, scoring 17 points with 10 rebounds in 21 minutes of action. Fifth-year senior Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) tallied her second career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in 25 minutes of work.

Thanks mainly to Weatherspoon and Brown, Lincoln completely dominated the glass, outrebounding the Bears, 48-26. The Lions nearly pulled down more offensive rebounds (25) than Bloomfield had total (26).

The freshman point guard duo of Ciani Montgomery (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic Prep) and Jaleesa Lanier (Easton, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) turned in career performances to boost the LU offense. Montgomery, on 6-of-9 shooting, scored a career-high 17 points, while Lanier registered a career-high 14 points with a team-high five assists.

Lincoln scored the first 14 points, never trailed, and kept Bloomfield off the scoreboard for the seven-plus minutes in beating the Bears. It was LU's last non-conference game of the season and the Lions improved to 7-3 overall, and 4-3 in home games.

Bloomfield did have one gasp, pulling to within five midway through the second quarter.

Brown scored the first four points of a 9-0 run that pushed the lead back to double figures, and the surplus wasn't less than 11 for the remainder of the game. Once the advantage was cut to 11 points, Lincoln responded with a 21-6 spurt to leave no doubt about the outcome.

Lincoln's lead ballooned to as much as 31 in the fourth quarter.

Lincoln returns to Manuel Rivero Gym to host Johnson C. Smith 5:30 p.m. Thursday for the Lions' first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association game of the year.
