LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Hundreds of students, faculty, staff and community members filled the International Cultural Center theater today to witness the unveiling of the 26th Bench by the Road from The Toni Morrison Society.
Lincoln University becomes only the second HBCU in the country selected for this honor.
The Bench by the Road Project chair, Dr. Carolyn Denard of Georgia College and State University, said she was pleased to receive and ultimately get approval for the University’s application for a bench placement by Dr. Lenetta R. Lee, vice president for student success and dean of the college.
Several community members participated including Sue Walker on behalf of U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan and State Senator Andrew Dinniman, Rev. Dr. James Smith of Second Baptist Church in Coatesville, Rev. Bernard J. Kefer of Oxford United Methodist Church, and Rev. Monica Guepet of West Grove United Methodist Church in West Grove.
During President Brenda A. Allen’s remarks, she recalled having attended the first Bench by the Road placement on July 26, 2008, at Sullivan’s Island in South Carolina, the African Slave Trade Point of Entry.
The choir directed by Dr. Camilla J. Horne and accompanied by Toni Caldwell Hall, performed two musical selections, City Called Heaven and The Road Home.
