Morton, Weatherspoon lead lions

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – The Lincoln University women's basketball team got back on the winning side of the ledger as they posted the 76-56 non-conference victory over the University of District of Columbia Tuesday.

The Lions have now claimed three of their last four games to improve to 5-3 on the season.

Fifth-year senior Joy Morton (Yeadon, Pa./Penn Wood) was especially efficient in her minutes, leading the team with 16 points, while playing just 14 minutes. Morton did all of her damage in the first and third quarters, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor with five rebounds.

Junior Jeana Weatherspoon (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) added 13 points and six rebounds, while junior Kania Pollock (Queens, N.Y./The Mary Louis Academy) scored seven of her 11 points in the first half and tied for a team-high with five assists. Fifth-year senior Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) pulled down a team-high nine rebounds with eight points.

Lincoln seized control of the game by scoring 14 of the last 16 points to close out the first quarter with a 12-point lead. It was a collective effort during this game-changing run as six different players found the scoresheet.

However, the Firebirds came out blazing in the second quarter with eight straight points and 10 of the first 12 points to pull to within four points. Lincoln steadied itself, started sharing the ball, and built its lead back to 10 points. The Lions scored four consecutive baskets, all of which were assisted on.

A quick 9-0 spurt at the start of the third quarter gave Lincoln a double-figure lead that the Lions wouldn't relinquish. The lead ballooned to as high as 19 points in the third quarter and as much as 25 before settling on a 20-point win.

Lincoln returns to action 6 p.m. Friday, traveling to Georgian Court for a non-conference game.
