WBB takes sole possession of CIAA North

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA - The Lincoln University women's basketball team opened the second quarter on a 15-2 run and never turned back in posting the 71-45 victory over Elizabeth City State Wednesday in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association action.

It was a meeting between two of the three teams tied for seventh in the D2SIDA Atlantic Regional poll. With the victory, Lincoln take sole possession of first place in the CIAA North Division at 5-1. The Lions improved to 12-4 overall, 5-1 in the CIAA, while the Vikings fell to 12-3 overall, 4-2 in the CIAA.

With the league's top defensive team in the building, Lincoln proved their mettle on the defensive end as well. The Orange & Blue limited Elizabeth City State to six points in each the second and third quarters and took a 23-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The opening quarter featured four ties and two lead changes as ECSU took the 17-13 lead into the second quarter. The Vikings did the majority of their damage in the paint, scoring 12 of the 17 points.

However, Lincoln corrected its defense and didn't allow ECSU to get going into the paint until the game was already essentially decided in the fourth quarter.

Lincoln used its defensive pressure to force 24 turnovers, which turned 32 points. Much of those points were in transition as LU held a robust 30-8 advantage in fast-break points.

Fifth-year senior Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) continues to pace the Lincoln offense with 16 points. She added five rebounds, three assists, and one steal.

Freshman Ciani Montgomery (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic Prep) reached double figures for the fourth time in the last seven games, tallying 13 points with five rebounds. Junior Jade Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends School), who hasn't played in a month, added 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Freshman point guard Jaleesa Lanier (Easton, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) dished out a team-high five assists to go along with six rebounds.

Lincoln goes back on the road 2 p.m. Saturday, traveling to Virginia Union (3-7 overall, 2-3 CIAA) – who is coming off a 65-55 loss to Bowie State.
