Mass Communications (BS, BA, minor)
Program Goals
- Demonstrated excellence in mass media writing styles that conform to highest standards in print and broadcast newsrooms, multimedia platforms, and graduate course work.
- Interpretation and application of mass media theories and appreciation of how mass media impacts current events and cultural production.
- Application of mass media ethics, particularly codes of professional integrity and competencies established by the Society of Professional Journalists, Online News Association, National Association of Broadcasters, The Accrediting Body on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, and The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
- Applied knowledge of mass media technologies consistent with the changes in mass media industries, including multimedia convergence.
- Application of research methods and approaches required for graduate study in mass communication.
Outcomes
- Analyze, describe and interpret the media content in the context of global society;
- Apply First Amendment and ethical principles in the production of radio and television content;
- Explain the historical, cultural and economic development of mass media industries, particularly in the United States and other societies;
- Write correctly and clearly in forms and styles appropriate for mass media industries and/or graduate school.
- Present a professional portfolio of curriculum-related materials that meet the highest of standards of TV and radio stations, as well as convergence sites.
- Demonstrate correct use of research methods in connection with broader mass communications theories and methodologies.
- Explain how new media technologies impact the content, audience, organizational and economic nature of contemporary television and radio
